Detroit Turbo Failure Symptoms
Recognizing the warning signs of a failing Detroit Diesel turbocharger is crucial to determining when it’s time for a replacement. Here are the most common indicators that your turbocharger may need to be replaced:
- Loss of power: When the turbocharger loses power, the engine may feel sluggish and less responsive and struggle to accelerate or maintain speed.
- Excessive smoke: Excessive fuel consumption or oil burning within the turbo may cause black, blue, or white exhaust smoke.
- Unusual noises: Whining or squealing sounds that occur during acceleration may indicate that the turbo is failing.
- Reduced fuel economy: If there is a problem with the turbo, this can cause the engine to work harder which decreases fuel economy.
- Check engine light: If the check engine light turns on while other symptoms are occurring, this could indicate a problem with the turbo.
- Oil leaks: Oil leaking from the turbocharger is a problem that indicates that the turbo is failing.

How do Detroit Diesel Turbochargers work?
Most Detroit Diesel turbochargers work by directing exhaust gases from the engine into the turbocharger which rapidly spins the turbine wheel. The turbine wheel spins the compressor wheel which compresses the air from the intake and forces it into the engine cylinders. The increased amount of air boosts engine power and improves fuel efficiency by allowing the engine to burn more fuel.
The Proprietary Asymmetric Turbocharger from Detroit Diesel works a little differently as this turbo consists of two different sized scrolls in the turbine housing that separate exhaust gas routing. This results in higher recirculation and helps reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. These turbos are also lighter and less complex than other turbos which contributes to improved performance and efficiency.
How much does it cost to replace a Detroit Diesel turbo?
A replacement Detroit Diesel turbocharger can cost between $1500 and $3000 depending on the model. The price of remanufactured Detroit turbos tends to be on the lower end of this range. The cost of labor to replace a Detroit Diesel turbo can range from $500 to $1000 depending on the rate of the mechanic and complexity of the job.
