We use top quality equipment to rebuild Cummins and Holset turbochargers using new and rebuilt parts to replace parts that have been damaged or worn out. Our machinery is capable of balancing heavy-duty turbochargers with speeds of up to 300,000 RPMs and each Cummins turbo rebuild is flowbench tested and inspected for oil leaks.

Some of the Cummins turbos we offer include but are not limited to:

  • 7 Cummins turbo
  • Cummins ISX15 turbo
  • N14 Cummins turbo
  • 24 valve Cummins turbo
  • 12 valve Cummins turbo
  • 3 Cummins turbo

When to Replace Cummins Turbos

It is important to recognize the warning signs of when a Cummins turbocharger is failing so you know when your turbocharger needs to be replaced. The following are the most common signs that it is time to replace your Cummins turbocharger:

  • Loss of power: There will be a noticeable loss of power as failing turbos struggle to produce adequate boost pressure.
  • Excessive smoke: Incomplete combustion can cause an increased amount of smoke from the exhaust that is usually blue or gray in color.
  • Unusual noises: Internal damage or excessive wear may cause a turbocharger to make whistling, screeching, or whining noises.
  • Reduced fuel economy: The loss of power of a failing turbo causes a decrease in fuel efficiency.
  • Oil leaks: Failing turbos may experience oil leaks that can cause further damage.
  • Check engine light: The check engine light and fault codes indicate a problem with the turbocharger.
  • Engine overheating: A failing turbo can cause the diesel engine to overheat.
  • Poor acceleration or throttle response: The loss of power can make it difficult to accelerate.

How do Cummins turbos work?

Cummins offers several different types of turbochargers. The following are the main types of turbochargers they offer and how they work:

  • Variable geometry turbocharger: Variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) technology was pioneered by Cummins. These turbochargers work by controlling the flow of exhaust gases using adjustable vanes which improve performance across a wide range of engine speeds and loads.
  • Fixed geometry turbocharger: Fixed geometry turbochargers have fixed blades in the turbine housing that are powered by the flow of exhaust gases which optimize performance within a certain RPM range. Some fixed geometry turbos feature a wastegate which manages exhaust flow and will cause some exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel which prevents over boosting at high engine speeds.
  • Two-stage turbochargers: Two-stage turbos consist of a small high-pressure unit for low-speed boost and a large low-pressure unit for high-speed boost which improves power, fuel efficiency, and torque across a wide range of speeds. These turbos often include wastegates that manage exhaust gas flow between the two units which ensure efficient operation across the entire speed range.
What are the Cummins turbo failure symptoms?

If you notice any of the following issues with your Cummins turbo, these could indicate that the turbo is failing:

  • Noticeable decrease in power and performance
  • Excessive exhaust smoke that is blue or gray in color
  • Unusual whining, screeching, or whistling noises
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Check engine light or fault codes
  • Oil leaks from the turbo housing
  • Engine overheating
  • Slow acceleration and difficulty maintaining high speeds
Is replacing a Cummins Turbo a big job?

Replacing a Cummins turbo can be a big, labor-intensive job that can take anywhere from several hours to several days depending on the complexity of the job. A skilled mechanic that has the required specialized tools and expertise can typically take between 3 and 8 hours to complete the job.
