What is a Volvo D13 Turbo?

The Volvo D13 Turbo Compound (D13TC) engine is a direct-injection, 13-liter diesel engine that features a Turbo Compound that improves fuel efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions using turbo compounding technology.  The following are the main features of the D13TC:

• Turbo compounding technology: The Turbo Compound captures and converts exhaust gas into mechanical energy and sends it back to the drive train.
• Waste heat recovery system: The turbine converts energy from exhaust gases into additional torque.
• Dynamic Torque: The D13TC features Dynamic Torque software that determines the optimum amount of torque based on vehicle performance such as road grade and load weight.
• Improved weight piston design: The improved weight piston design offers a higher compression ratio that guides the flame back to the center of the cylinder for improved efficiency.
• Improved fuel efficiency: The D13TC is 6% more fuel efficient than the 2020 D13 engine and 11% more fuel efficient than 2015 models.

Volvo D13 engines that did not come with the Turbo Compound can be upgraded with a variety of turbochargers including the PDI VGT Turbo, Volvo D13 Mack MP8 Turbocharger, and Volvo Holset HE43VET Turbo.  The design and specifications of Volvo D13 turbochargers will vary depending on the model year and configuration of the D13 engine.

Volvo D13 Bad Turbo Symptoms

If a Volvo D13 turbocharger starts to fail, it can affect the performance and efficiency of your engine. The following are the main symptoms of a bad Volvo D13 turbo:

• Exhaust smoke: Bluish-gray exhaust smoke can result if oil leaks into the exhaust system from a damaged seal or crack. Black smoke coming from under the hood can also be caused by leaks or weak clamps and pumps.
• Power loss: The turbo may not provide enough boost to the engine, resulting in poor acceleration and throttle response.
• Loud noises: Loud engine noises when operating and/or starting the engine could indicate a failing turbo.
• Check engine light: The check engine light may come on if there is a problem with the turbo.
• Loss of fuel efficiency: A turbocharger that is not functioning well will result in a loss of fuel efficiency.
