VGT Actuators

We can help you determine the specific VGT Actuator based on your engine serial number or VIN.

Variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs) are different from other turbos because they can adjust their A/R ratio to accommodate changing conditions, maximizing their performance and efficiency.  The key piece that allows this to happen is the VGT actuator, also known as VGT turbo actuator, that is designed to dynamically adjust the vanes within the turbocharger to control the amount of exhaust gases.  If there is a problem with the actuator within VGT turbos, it will need to be repaired or replaced to ensure the efficiency of the turbocharger.

HD Turbo is a diesel turbocharger remanufacturing company serving customers across the nation.  We provide remanufactured as well as parts including VGT actuators.  If you need a new actuator for your VGT, we offer remanufactured VGT actuators and repair services to fix your turbo actuator.

What is a VGT Actuator?

VGTs are turbochargers that have adjustable vanes to help control the amount of exhaust flowing towards the turbine wheel.  The VGT actuator is the part that controls this mechanism by moving the vanes or a sliding sleeve inside the turbocharger to increase or decrease the flow of exhaust gases that drive the turbine wheel, thereby increasing or decreasing the turbo boost.

The VGT actuator dynamically adjusts the vanes for the best airflow depending on the conditions of the engine, like RPM and load.  For example, vanes are closed to restrict exhaust airflow at low speeds and they are opened to allow more flow at higher RPMs.

Symptoms of a Failing VGT Actuator

The VGT actuator must be functional to control the variable geometry mechanism within a VGT turbocharger.  It is important to recognize when the VGT actuator is failing so you can have the part repaired or replaced.

The following are common symptoms of a failing VGT actuator:

  • Loss of power
  • Turbo boost that is too high or too low
  • Unusual noise
  • Flashing engine management light or fault codes appearing
  • Performance issues such as compromised engine power or reduced boost pressure due to the actuator being stuck
  • Circuit issues such as issues with the CAN wires or a short to ground on the 12-volt power supply wire
What VGT Actuator Do I Need?

It is important to get the right VGT actuator for your specific engine and turbocharger.  If you are not sure what type of VGT actuator you need, our professionals at HD Turbo can help.  Send us your engine serial number or VIN number and we can determine which type of VGT actuator you need.  We offer a wide selection of remanufactured VGT actuators from brands like Cummins, Dodge, Mack, Volvo, and more.  We also provide repair services to repair and recalibrate turbo actuators and other parts.

You can submit a contact form to find out what type of VGT turbo actuator replacement you need or get an estimate on a new actuator.  All of our VGT actuators come with our twelve-month unlimited mileage warranty for your peace of mind.

What does a VGT actuator do?

A VGT actuator dynamically controls the airflow of exhaust gases that drive the turbine wheel within VGT turbochargers.  The actuator either increases or decreases airflow in response to the engine’s operating conditions which increases or decreases the turbo boost to enhance the power and efficiency of the VGT turbocharger.

How does the VGT actuator work?

The VGT actuator controls the airflow by moving the vanes or a sliding sleeve inside the turbocharger to increase or decrease exhaust gases flowing to the turbine wheel.

What happens when a VGT turbo actuator goes bad?

A bad or failing VGT actuator compromises the performance of the engine, impacting its power and efficiency.  Over boost, under boost, and inconsistent boost power along with the inability to accurately adjust the turbocharger’s geometry are signs of a bad actuator.

How much does it cost to replace a turbo actuator?

It can cost between $350 and $1000 to get a replacement VGT actuator, depending on the type of actuator.  There may be additional costs involved if you hire a professional to install it and you may also need to invest in a calibration tool to make sure the new actuator is properly calibrated.
