Volvo offers a range of diesel engines that come standard in their truck lineup, including the D11, D12, D13, and D16 series, that are known for their power, efficiency, and durability. Volvo’s diesel engines typically feature advanced turbocharger technology to optimize performance while meeting emissions regulations and fuel efficiency standards. Volvo diesel turbos used vary between engine models. If you need repairs for your Volvo truck turbo or a replacement turbo, we can help determine the type of turbo used in your engine and provide repairs or compatible replacement options.
HD Turbo offers a large inventory of Volvo turbos that ensure optimal engine performance, improved throttle response, increased horsepower and torque, better towing capacity, and better fuel economy. You can choose from our selection of remanufactured Volvo diesel turbos or work with us for repairs, turbo rebuilds, or upgrades to improve the performance of your turbocharger.
Different Types of Volvo Diesel Turbos
As mentioned above, Volvo offers different turbochargers for each of their diesel engine models. The following are the different types of Volvo diesel turbos:
- Volvo D11 Turbocharger: The D11 turbocharger is a variable geometry turbocharger that compresses and moves intake air and provides back pressure to drive the EGR process. It also supercharges the I-VEB system which retards horsepower at low RPM for better engine breaking. D11 turbos maximize the performance and fuel economy of the engine.
- Volvo D12 Turbocharger: The D12 turbocharger compresses intake air to increase the power output of the engine. It works by using exhaust gas to spin the turbine wheel which then spins the compressor wheel. The compressor wheel draws in and compresses air to create a high-velocity, low-pressure stream. The air stream is then converted into high-pressure, low-velocity air stream that is sent to the engine. D12 turbos allow the engine to burn more fuel which results in higher power output.
- Volvo D13TC Turbocharger: The Volvo D13TC turbocharger recovers the exhaust gas from the engine and converts it into mechanical energy that goes back into the engine using turbo compounding technology. The turbine directs the recaptured energy to a gear link that pushes the crankshaft. The extra power provided by the D13TC turbo delivers extra horsepower at lower RPMs and improves fuel efficiency by up to 6.5%.
- Volvo D16 Turbocharger: The Volvo D16 engines come with a twin turbocharger with separate exhaust manifolds that deliver high torque at low RPMs. Exhaust engine gases are used to spin the turbine wheel which then spins the compressor wheel, drawing in fresh air that goes through the air filter and into the engine. The high torque at low RPMs helps improve maneuverability and speeds up acceleration.
Volvo Diesel Turbo Failure Symptoms
It is important to recognize when a Volvo truck turbo is failing as your engine will no longer be operating at optimum efficiency. The following are the main signs of a failing Volvo turbocharger:
- White smoke: If white smoke comes out of the exhaust when you press on the gas while the engine is parked and in neutral, there may be oil leaking past the bearings within the turbo. The burning oil produces bluish-green smoke.
- Check engine light: The check engine light could indicate a problem with the turbocharger, but the engine must be inspected by a professional to know for sure.
- Loud noises: A loud whining noise could be a sign of a failing turbocharger.
- Power loss: A reduction in power and acceleration speed may occur as the turbocharger if failing.
- Poor fuel economy: A failing turbocharger decreases the fuel efficiency of the engine.
