Detroit is the only major Class 8 engine brand where you’re likely to be working on two completely different injection technologies in the same shop on the same day.
A Series 60 uses mechanically-actuated electronic unit injectors, the cam presses on the injector, and electronics control timing and quantity. A DD15 uses Bosch high-pressure common rail, where a separate pump supplies a rail and the injector is purely an electrically-triggered valve. Different diagnostics, different failure modes, different parts, different everything except the badge on the valve cover. And with millions of Series 60 miles still turning alongside a large and aging DD fleet, both matter.

The DD13, DD15, and DD16 are collectively the HDEP (Heavy Duty Engine Platform) family, sharing a common architecture across displacements. They power the Freightliner Cascadia, Western Star, and a range of vocational trucks.
The distinction that trips people up: “12.7 Detroit” always means Series 60 12.7L. “DD15” never means Series 60. But because both get called “Detroit” and both are 14-to-15-litre-class engines in the shop, cross-ordering happens, and a Series 60 EUI and a DD15 common-rail injector have nothing whatsoever in common. If you’re ordering from a description rather than a part number, confirm the platform first.
DD15 and DD16 Injectors and the Cross-Reference Problem
DD-platform injector numbering is genuinely difficult, and it’s worth understanding why rather than just working around it.
The same physical injector appears under Detroit numbers, Detroit reman numbers, and Bosch numbers, with prefixes and suffixes signaling new versus reman versus supplier-specific rebuild. A single DD15 injector commonly cross-references to thirty or more valid part numbers.

What this means practically: A part number alone is weak evidence of fitment on this platform. Two DD15s of different model years and emissions families can both legitimately show “A4720700887” in a parts database while requiring different units in practice, because supersession history and emissions-family calibration aren’t captured in the base number. The engine serial number is the only reliable input. This is the platform where fitment verification stops being a nice-to-have.

The DD15 Amplified Injection System
The DD15 does something the DD13 and DD16 don’t, and it changes how you diagnose it.
Standard common rail delivers fuel at rail pressure. The DD15 uses an amplifier to boost pressure above rail pressure at the injector during the main injection event, which gives a higher peak injection pressure without running the entire rail at that level. It’s efficient and it works well.
It also adds failure modes. An amplifier control valve problem produces symptoms that look like injector failure such as rough running, imbalance, and power loss, while the injector itself is serviceable. Before condemning a set of DD15 injectors, verify the amplifier circuit in DiagnosticLink. This is one of the more common misdiagnoses on the platform and it’s an expensive one.
Series 60 — 12.7L and 14.0L
The Series 60 is thirty-eight years old and there are still hundreds of thousands of them working, which is why series 60 injectors search demand rose 80% year over year while newer platforms declined.
Its electronic unit injectors are a fundamentally different animal. The camshaft provides the mechanical energy to generate injection pressure; the electronics control timing and quantity via a solenoid. There is no common rail, no high-pressure pump, and no rail pressure sensor to diagnose.

Series 60 diagnostic notes that differ from common rail:
- Cylinder cutout in DiagnosticLink is your primary tool, not rail pressure analysis.
- Injector height and timing are mechanically set on installation. Incorrect injector height produces symptoms that mimic a bad injector on a correctly-functioning unit. Follow the specified procedure with the correct gauge.
- EUIs need calibration codes on later variants; confirm whether yours does.
- Injector tubes and O-rings are a separate wear item. Detroit series 60 injector seals shows real search demand, and a leaking tube can put fuel in the oil or coolant while the injector itself is fine.
- Fuel in the oil is a classic Series 60 symptom worth investigating promptly, it dilutes the oil, degrades lubrication, and raises the oil level in a way that’s easy to miss on a busy PM check.

That last row is worth flagging twice. A truck that derates and won’t complete a regen while running smoothly almost certainly has a doser problem, not a main injector problem. What to Insist on When Buying Detroit Injectors
- Flow-matched sets: Six injectors each individually within spec but scattered across the tolerance band will produce measurable cylinder imbalance. Ask for the set-matching tolerance, not just the unit pass criteria.
